Here's a selection of questions people often ask about SPLENDA® Sucralose. We try to make our replies as informative as possible, but if you have any questions that aren't answered here, please contact us.
What is Sucralose?
Sucralose starts with sugar, tastes like sugar, but it’s not sugar.
What is SPLENDA®?
SPLENDA® is the brand name for sucralose pioneered and manufactured by Tate & Lyle – the no-calorie sweetener that starts with sugar, tastes like sugar, but it’s not sugar.
How is SPLENDA® Sucralose made?
SPLENDA® Sucralose is manufactured by a multi-step patented process which starts with cane sugar. The process selectively replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms. The result is a sweetener that is approximately 600 times sweeter than sugar.
How many calories does SPLENDA® Sucralose contain?
SPLENDA® Sucralose is not recognized by the body as a carbohydrate and is not metabolized by the body. Therefore SPLENDA® Sucralose has no calories.
Does SPLENDA® Sucralose interact with other food ingredients?
No. SPLENDA® Sucralose is inert and does not interact with other commonly used food ingredients, even after prolonged storage.
Can SPLENDA® Sucralose be used as a direct replacement for nutritive sweeteners such as sugar (sucrose) or glucose syrups?
Depending on the application, SPLENDA® Sucralose can be used to replace nutritive sweeteners such as sugar or glucose syrup. In products such as beverages, sucralose can be used to partially or fully replace nutritive sweeteners in order to develop products that have all the perceived sweetness of a full calorie product. In other food items such as confectionery, ice cream and baked goods the bulking effects of sugar need to be provided by traditional bulking agents from Tate & Lyle’s extensive ingredient portfolio such as STA-LITE® polydextrose, maltodextrin or sugar alcohols.

No. However, we do recommend that you store SPLENDA® Sucralose as you would most dry ingredients under ambient, dry conditions.
What form is SPLENDA® Sucralose sold in?
SPLENDA® Sucralose Granulated is a free flowing dry powder available in both 1kg and 10kg pack sizes.
In certain countries it is also available as a 25% w/w liquid concentrate. Please contact your Sucralose account manager at Tate & Lyle regarding availability of Sucralose Liquid Concentrate.
What is the difference between the SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener packets and granulated products (sold in supermarkets) and SPLENDA® Sucralose for food and beverage manufacturers?
SPLENDA® Sucralose is sold as an ingredient to food and beverage manufacturers as a dry powder that is 600 times sweeter than sugar and has no calories. It is intended for use in commercially manufactured products such as foods and beverages. SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener sold in supermarkets is intended for use by consumers for sweetening tea and coffee (packet form), for sprinkling, cooking and baking (granulated form which has, spoon for spoon, the same sweetness of sugar). SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener combines the ingredient form of SPLENDA® Sucralose with other food ingredients that add bulk so that it can be used in the home.
